Basic Beading and
Wire Wrap Beading March 8
Learn how to make beaded jewelry with Dee Kotaska at the Kanabec History Center.
Basic Beading from 10 to 11:30 a.m. In this class you will learn about basic beading tools, wire, beads and stringing techniques for jewelry making.
Wire Wrap Link Beading from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. here you will learn the decorative wire wrap technique to create unique jewelry.
You must pre-register and pre-pay for these classes, there is a registration and materials fee for each class. You will make a pair of earrings and a bracelet in each of the classes. There is a discount if you would like to take both Basic Beading and Wire Wrap Link Beading. Anyone who has taken the class(es) previously can bring their own tools and come bead for a greatly reduced fee. Call 320-679-1665 for fee information and to register. Photography Workshop Series At The
Kanabec History Center
Photography can be a fun, invigorating and enlightening way to capture and share the world we see and experience. The advent of digital camera has made photography so much more accessible and at the same time, more confusing. These workshops are designed to explain photography in understandable terms in a fun setting. Once we understand how cameras work, we will work to develop an "eye" for photography and creative artistic expression through the medium or photography and creative artistic expression through the medium of photography. Digital Camera Basics, Thurs. March 24 (7 to 9 pm.): Provides basic information for those intending to buy a new digital camera or for those who have just purchased a camera.
Understanding The Camera Thurs. March 31 (7 to 9:30 pm.): Learn how the camera works, the difference between SLR and point and shoot cameras and digital and film cameras. Time will be spent negotiating the menus and options of digital cameras. Since each camera has different programing, it is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL THAT EACH PERSON BRING THEIR CAMERA AND MANUAL TO THE CLASS. Open to all levels, both digital and film cameras. Opening the Photographer's "Eye" April 7 (7 to 9 pm.): Learn what makes a pleasing photograph rather than just a snapshot. We sill discuss composition- what goes into creating a pleasing image. Photography literally means to "write with light" so we will discuss how to work with natural light and on camera flash. Films and processing will also be discussed if film camera users are in the class. Appropriate for all levels, digital and film cameras, point and shoot and SLR.

Faux Finish Workshops
at the Kanabec History Center
Five different, one session workshops cover all aspects of decorative painting for homeowners and aspiring painters. Saturdays, Now thru Mar. 22 ( 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) Take as many or as few as you as you like. "Wall Finishes" is a prerequisite to the other workshops. All workshops are taught by artist Eric Carlisle.

It consists of traditional and contemporary styles, learning glazing & mottled techniques, scale & color are all an important part of painted finishes.

Learn traditional step by step method of how to duplicate the look of real marble as well as paint fantasy marble.
Texture Wall Surfaces

With the wide range of textured surface products available today, it is important to learn the proper application techniques for the various products to achieve beautiful results. This workshops teaches traditional European plaster techniques & modern contemporary techniques.
Create Your Own Stencils

Learn how to take your own design elements, from drawings, photos or magazines and recreate it into a perfect stencil. Workshop includes using stencils and overlays from a complex victorian wall covering pattern.

These are exciting out of the ordinary finishes: metallics, leather & crackle finishes are a few of the many that will be taught, 3 per class on a rotating basis.

Basic Photo Editing with PhotoShop
New Classes Sat. March 15, 2008
at the Kanabec History Center
Level 1: Basic Photoshop Elements: 9 to noon
Learn the basics of Photoshop software to do touch ups, color adjustments, get rid of red eye and exposure corrections. Also some simple embellishment techniques.
Level 2: Advanced Photoshop Elements: 1 to 3:30
For those who know the basics of the Photoshop software, but would like hands-on editing practice and instruction on the more advanced features: the clone tool, text, borders and using layers.
Save $5 when you take both classes call 320-679-1665 for fee information and to register.
Must be at least 16 years old (12-15 okay if accompanied by an adult)
Bring your own laptop (with Photoshop Elements software) and images to work on. A limited number of laptops are available for use at class on first come first served basis.
The instructor, C.J. Gustafson, has been teaching photography and computer classes for
local colleges, businesses and community groups for over 10 years. In
addition to writing and photographing professionally, she owns Picturing
Pine Artwork & Gifts, a quaint shop located in Pine City that features her
images and the work of several other local artists.

New Beading Group
To Meet at the Kanabec History Center
A Beading Group is forming at the Kanabec History Center and will meet the first Thursday of the Month at 7 p.m. beginning Thursday March 6. Anyone involved in the craft of beading is welcome to bring their projects to work on and network with other area beaders. It will be an opportunity to get some of those projects done and share techniques, information, perhaps trade beads while meeting some new friends with similar interests. The group will also be looking for 2 or 3 people who would be interested in sharing "hosting" duties which include picking up a key for the building and starting a pot of coffee. The first meeting will be hosted by Dee Kotaska an area artist, who has taught a few Beading Workshops at the History Center.
