Hello,

 

I am writing from Commissioner Steve Sviggum's Office at the MN Department of Labor and Industry. 

 

As you know, Steve Sviggum was appointed Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) by Governor Tim Pawlenty on July 17, 2007. In this role, Sviggum leads Minnesota's effort to protect the health and safety of workers and employers in all parts of the state. Sviggum was elected Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1998, when Republicans took control of the legislative body for the first time in more than a decade. Having first been elected to the House in 1978, he was elected House Republican Leader in 1993. 

 

In his new role as Commissioner, Steve is endeavoring to reform workers' compensation in Minnesota. After last year's reform bill failed, the Department of Labor and Industry has been busy working with insurers, employers, and employees to conceive new ways to improve Minnesota's workers' compensation system. 

 

On Tuesday, September 23, 2008, Commissioner Sviggum would like the opportunity to talk with members of the Kanabec Area Chamber of Commerce to discuss last year's bill, the necessity to reform workers' compensation in Minnesota, and the new bill that will be introduced in the 2009 Session. Following a brief, approximately 20-minute presentation, the Commissioner would like to open the topic for discussion with a 40-minute Q&A session. 

 

This upcoming year certainly has a lot of potential to see some vital reforms to the workers' compensation system. We hope the members of the Kanabeca Area Chamber of Commerce are excited to learn more about the proposed changes and will host Commissioner Steve Sviggum's talk.

 

As the Commissioner is touring the state, his schedule is pretty fixed. Nevertheless, Commissioner Sviggum would love to talk with members of the chamber and is able to do so on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 around 11:00AM
