Kanabec History Center Annual Museum Day Sat. May 16 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
The Kanabec History Center is hosting its annual free Museum Day, Sat. May 16th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year they have partnered with the Mora Quilting Friends who will have a quilt show in the historic Coin School and quilt appraisals by appointment, call Bonnie at 679-5245 for an appraisal appointment. The group has also lined up some quilt shop vendors. They have also donated a quilt that is being raffled off for a $1.00 per raffle, tickets are available at the History Center. The drawing will be at 3 p.m. on May 16. The History Center will have quilts from the museum archives on view in the log building. There will be food, new exhibits, the museum gift shop and antique nook.
The Mora Town & Country Garden Club will have a plant sale from starting at 7 a.m. at the History Center. The Common Threads Spinning & Weaving Group will be doing demos throughout the day. The Friends of the Grass Lake Mission Church will be on hand with information on the progress of the restoration of this historic Kanabec County building.
At 2 p.m. there will be a short program dedicating the new dala horse a gift from the American Swedish Institute to the Kanabec History Center. There will be some make and take dala projects for the kids, a display of a variety hand carved dala horse by local wood carver, Robert Swetz who will also be demonstrating carving techniques through out the day. The Kanabec History Center is located at 805 West Forest Avenue in Mora.

Opening the Photographer's "Eye"
Wed. April 29, 2009 (7 to 9 p.m.) Fee: $25
In this workshop we will discuss what makes a pleasing photograph rather than just a snapshot. We will discuss composition-just what goes into creating a pleasing image. Photography literally means to write with light so we will discuss how to work with natural light and camera flash. We will discuss people photography-how to get great shots of family and friends. We will also cover processing, both at home and in outlabs. Open to all levels, digital and film cameras, point and shoot and SLR. Max: 30
Take Your Camera Off Automatic
Wed. May 6, 2009 (7 to 9 p.m.) Fee: $25
Today's cameras have automatic exposure settings that will give the correct exposure in most situations. However, there are situations when one wants to override the automatic settings and control the shutter speed and aperture or create special effects. We will discuss aperture and shutter speeds and other factors like ISO that affect getting a more correctly exposed image. Appropriate for SLR camera owners.

Creating Images in the Field
Wed. May 16, 2009 (7 to 9 p.m.) Fee: $60
This is a day long workshop. We will leave the History Center at 8 am and drive to Banning State Park. In the car on the way, we will discuss what the light of the day is telling us about the images we can take and other factors/assignments for the day. Each person will have individual time in the field with the instructor to go over their camera, suggestions for creating an image with “pop” or other questions. We will return to the History Center by 4 p.m.. BRING A BAG LUNCH, YOUR CAMERA AND MANUAL. Dress appropriately for the day.
