            I will be presenting the Memorial Day address at the
            following events:


            *Monday, May 30, 2011
            10 a.m., Oakwood Cemetery, Mora
            11 a.m., Brook Park Cemetery*

    Memorial Day is much more than a three-day weekend that marks the
    beginning of summer. To many people, especially the nation's
    thousands of combat veterans, this day, which has a history
    stretching back all the way to the Civil War, is an important
    reminder of those who died in the service of their country.

    This day holds extra meaning to me as a Navy veteran who served two
    tours of duty. I pray that many people will take the time to
    participate in area events and pay tribute to the true intention of
    the holiday: to honor those service men and service women who have
    given their lives for the cause of American freedom.

    The gift of our freedom comes with a price and we can never repay
    the debt of gratitude we owe to our service members who made the
    ultimate sacrifice. These are patriotic Americans who put their
    families, their communities and their country first. These are folks
    who were willing to put their lives on the line to uphold the host
    of freedoms we all enjoy.

    This also is a good time to make sure our children understand the
    immense sacrifices our service members have made. The legacy will be
    theirs to uphold one day and it is important for our youth to
    comprehend what these American heroes have given us in the name of
    liberty.
