  Hi Everyone ~

I wanted to pass this correspondence on to all of you about my recent meeting with Ross Wiggins. You may have read the article in the Times last week about his local organization for the Developmentally Challenged. As you will notice, there is a dance planned for April 17th. Please read the messages below which I believe will help answer some of your questions. As you will notice, any help you would be willing to give would be greatly appreciated. His number is below so you can contact him directly.

  Thank you all.

  Karen.

  First message after our meeting...

Hi Karen, it was nice chatting with you last week and hearing about the Chamber and what it does for the local business's.......As I mentioned,we are planning a spring dance for folks with developmental disabilities....There is a real need for this segment of our population to be able to get out and socialize with others.....This dance allows them to do just that........There are some costs that go along with putting on events like this , such as renting a D.J. for music, refreshments, and door prizes, which are usually donated by local business owners......Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.......The dance will be on April 17th at Trailview School from 5pm. To 8pm.......Let me know if there is anything else you need from me and I will do whatever I can....Thank you so much for taking the time to listen and helping us out....Take care, Ross

I then asked him for some details...

Hey there Karen, I had a vision when I started putting on these events as to how I saw them growing and expanding over time. I wanted to stay away from the Special Olympics Org. because of restrictions, and rigid guidelines. It is a great organization that does so much for Developmentally Challenged youth and adults, but I wanted more flexibility to reach out to as many people as possible. The name of the organization is the Mora Police Athletic Association (M.P.A.A.) My qualifications include ten years with the Special Olympics, helping organize, and put on weightlifting tournaments. I also was a youth wrestling coach at an inner city park in Mpls. for two years. I coached Olympic weightlifting for youth through the Police Athletic League for two years as well. Lastly, I was involved with several community policing programs while I worked for the Mpls. Park Police.

My goal for these events is to provide an avenue for Developmentally Challenged adults so they have opportunities to get together for recreation and social functions. There have been four functions so far with another one on Feb.25th and the response has been overwhelming. I believe it will continue to grow and expand, such as the dance coming up in April and that is why I welcome any help from local business' to help cover expenses. They are very modest at this time but the dance and a summer track and field day will cost a bit more to pull off in the manner it should be. I would welcome the chance to meet with anyone who may have questions or input for me. I can be reached at 612. 501-7049 Thank you in advance for your support, Ross W.
