Learn about life in the logging camps, how the business operated, how it changed from the beginning to the end of it's hey day! Photos and artifacts accompany this program by Steve Marudas, local logging history buff. Steve grew up in the Hinckley area and now lives in Kroschel township. Researching and searching for Kanabec County's logging era history has become a passion of Steve's over last few years. He feels its important to rediscover and record the historic evidence of the vast logging operations of Pine and Kanabec Counties, before the passage of time erases the signs and knowledge of this GRAND ERA in Minnesota history. Free program, Free coffee and cake. The Kanabec History Center is located at 805 West Forest Avenue in Mora. Hours Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 :30 p.m. 320-679-1665
Register Now for Photography Workshops at the Kanabec History Center.
Digital Camera Basics
Wed. April 15, 2009 (7-to 9:30 p.m.) Fee: $25
Digital cameras can be absolutely overwhelming. In this class we will go over the very basic features of digital cameras: batteries, memory cards, deleting and saving images and connecting to the tv or computer. If you are interested in purchasing a new camera, some basic information will be shared. Max: 10 people
Understanding the Camera
Wed. April 22, 2009 (7 to 9:30 p.m.) Fee: $25
Designed for those who have taken this workshop before, it will be a refresher on the basics of digital photography. Even if you haven’t taken the workshop, it will help you understand your digital camera since cameras have advanced greatly since the days of simply “point and shoot.” Even the smallest camera has a lot more capability than most photographers are aware of. In this workshop, we will discuss how a camera works, the difference between SLR and point and shoot cameras, film cameras and digital cameras. We will spend time negotiating the menus and options of digital cameras. Open to all levels, both digital and film cameras.
Max: 10 people
Opening the Photographer's "Eye"
Wed. April 29, 2009 (7 to 9 p.m.) Fee: $25
In this workshop we will discuss what makes a pleasing photograph rather than just a snapshot. We will discuss composition-just what goes into creating a pleasing image. Photography literally means to write with light so we will discuss how to work with natural light and camera flash. We will discuss people photography-how to get great shots of family and friends. We will also cover processing, both at home and in outlabs. Open to all levels, digital and film cameras, point and shoot and SLR. Max: 30
Take Your Camera Off Automatic
Wed. May 6, 2009 (7 to 9 p.m.) Fee: $25
Today's cameras have automatic exposure settings that will give the correct exposure in most situations. However, there are situations when one wants to override the automatic settings and control the shutter speed and aperture or create special effects. We will discuss aperture and shutter speeds and other factors like ISO that affect getting a more correctly exposed image. Appropriate for SLR camera owners.
Max: 10 people
Creating Images in the Field
Wed. May 16, 2009 (7 to 9 p.m.) Fee: $25
This is a day long workshop. We will leave the History Center at 8 am and drive to Banning State Park. In the car on the way, we will discuss what the light of the day is telling us about the images we can take and other factors/assignments for the day. Each person will have individual time in the field with the instructor to go over their camera, suggestions for creating an image with “pop” or other questions. We will return to the History Center by 4 pm. BRING A BAG LUNCH, YOUR CAMERA AND MANUAL. Dress appropriately for the day. If weather is REALLY inclement, listen to KBEK for cancellation information Maximum 6
